kelly and i were so excited when material connexion contacted filzfelt to be involved in the fashion center's sidewalk catwalk. the mannequins were unveiled last thursday and rachel roy and rebecca moses used our felt in their designs. you can see all the mannequins here. yay fashion and yay felt!

you are what you eat.

midwife/middle school science teacher | san antonio, tx | 3-person household (including dog) | first week after deciding to eat locally grown vegetables.

bartender | san antonio, tx | 1-person household | goes to sleep at 8am and wakes up at 4pm daily.

you are what you eat by mark menjivar.

you are what you eat is a series of portraits made by documenting the interiors of refrigerators in homes across the united states. for three years, [mark] traveled around the country exploring food issues. the more time [mark] spent speaking and listening to individual stories, the more [mark] began to think about the foods we consume and the effects they have on us as individuals and communities. an intense curiosity and questions about responsibility led me to begin making these unconventional portraits.

a refrigerator is both a private and a shared space. one person likened the question, "may i photograph the interior of your fridge?" to asking someone to pose nude for the camera. each fridge is photographed as is: nothing added, nothing taken away.

these are portraits of the rich and the poor, of vegetarians, republicans, members of the nra, those left out, the under-appreciated, former soldiers in hitler’s ss, dreamers and so many more. we never know the full story of one's life. my hope is that we will think deeply of the ways we care: how we care for our bodies, how we care for others and how we care for the land.

back to black.

i downloaded the new iphone os4 and can i say i hate the new home screen wallpaper feature? it makes the screen so difficult to read and there's no way to turn it off or pick a solid color (unless you create one yourself). for all those haters out there, here's one.

i wish your wish.

i wish your wish by rivane neuenschwander. so lovely.

i wish your wish will be installed in the new museum’s lobby gallery space (always open to the public free of charge). at the church of nosso senhor do bonfim in salvador, bahia, brazil the faithful tie silk ribbons to their wrists and to the gates of the church, and, according to tradition, their wishes are granted when the ribbons wear away and fall off. for neuenschwander’s installation i wish your wish at the new museum, hundreds of similar ribbons will be printed with visitors’ wishes from past projects, and will hang from the gallery walls. visitors will be invited to remove a ribbon, tie it to their wrist, and replace it with a new wish written on slip of paper, continuing the project that keeps generating new ribbons and dreams.

there's also an article on the entire exhibition in the new york times. can't make it to the new museum? you can submit your wishes online.

marina abramović.

the newest performance piece of marina abramović ended on monday at moma. the artist had been siting seven hours a day for six days a week in the museum's atrium and visitors were allowed to sit in a chair opposite the artist for as short as a few minutes to an entire day. the museum featured a live feed on its website as well as a flickr stream. here are a few of the sitters (you may recognize one or two).

rip tobias wong.

i was shocked to find out that tobias wong passed away sunday at the age of 35. this young and extremely talented designer will be missed.

a short bio from citizen:citizen:
originally from canada, tobias wong (b.1974) studied art at cooper union in new york city, where he graduated in sculpture. veering across disciplines and materials, wong has created an oeuvre that is immediately accessible, yet contentious. he pursues his own brand of conceptualism, the self coined “paraconceptual,” and “postinteresting,” and uses design as a medium, as he says, to expose the similarities between art and design, rather than to blur their boundaries.
