lantern.

last night i went to the lantern festival at forest hills cemetery in jamaica plain.

the festival is loosely based on buddhist lantern floating ceremonies where it is believed that a gate opens to the world of the ancestors at this time in mid-summer. in the japanese bon festival, people light lanterns to invite ancestors to visit their families and then the lanterns are sent floating out to sea to guide the ancestors back to the world of the spirits.

it was truly beautiful and moving. go to my flickr for a few more shots.
