i just found the website walk score which scores your home's walkability. (sorry, that's not a word.) my address scored a 95 out of 100. lucky because i am, in fact, carless. but it also lists nearby grocery stores, coffee shops, schools, parks, etc. and could be a useful tool if your looking to move sans car.
it also lists celebrity locations including bill gates' house at a pitiful 5 out of 100. for shame, bill.

thank you for the comment and the link. while a lot of people need a car to get around (and prefer it), there are a lot that live without one. i walk to restaurants, the market, and a nearby park and when i can't, take public transportation. i'd say quite a few people still walk.
