fashioning felt.

i've been salivating about this for months and now, at last, its almost upon us! fashioning felt at the cooper-hewitt national design museum on view march 6th - september 7, 2009.

need more specifics? 7thspace did a more complete article including specifics on the installation by toshiko mori architects. now go forth and view felt!

this exhibition will explore the varied new uses of felt—an ancient material, believed to be one of the earliest techniques for making textiles. made by matting together wool fibers with humidity and friction, felting requires little technological expertise and is an extremely versatile material. the exhibition will begin with historic examples of felts, showcase innovations in handmade felts, and feature contemporary uses of industrial felt in a range of fields, including product design, fashion, architecture, and home furnishings.

appeel.

appeel by thegreeneyl. [via it's nice that.]

appeel is a virus spreading through interacting individuals.

surfaces are covered by thousands of coloured stickers laid out in a grid. peeling a sticker off leaves a white spot in the grid, people hence start individually and collectively changing its appearance. once off the wall, the stickers ask to be sticked somewhere: people begin putting them on objects, walls, people, they collect them, they compose new images, they write messages. slowly the little stickers spread, appearing further away from their source and occupying space.

appeel inherits basic principles of interactivity and generativity applied to purely analogous means. its immanent potential of penetrating regulated public and private space counterpoints its apparent plainness. the dot spreads with the promise to ironically mark its carrier as a symbol of sale and possession.

circles!

the wheels are always turning at filzfelt and kelly and i are always thinking about new things to do with our felt while staying true to our design philosophy of simplicity and focus on the material itself. so we recently launched two new die-cut circle sizes... 8" which is great for use as a trivet, mousepad, extra large coaster, seating pad or jewelry display and the perfect placemat or trivet-sized 11 1/2".

and as always we welcome people taking our basic products and doing what they will with them!

furthermore.

furthermore from sam potts. i read this and smiled the whole way through.

I love that there can be an art to nearly everything. I love that Frank Lloyd Wright was shameless. I love that geometry is ancient. I love that the littlest things can make biggest differences, like cufflinks and a pinch of salt and sometimes, five minutes. I love the lowercase ‘g’ of Electra and the ‘3’ of Walbaum. I love that some things are inexplicable, in fact more things than you’d expect. I love that driving a car feels like a natural ability. I love that no expertise is needed to appreciate a well-made thing. I love that you can pretty much always assume there is a better way. I love that anything can seem new. I love that a computer is referred to as a machine. I love that music doesn’t have to mean anything to be beautiful. This. I love that there are theories about handwriting, the composition of matter, and horse racing. I love the lightbulb joke about how many boring people. I love the moment at dusk when the F train comes out of the tunnel after Carroll St. and fills with golden sunset light and feels like a cathedral. I love the slow motion replay. I love that Japanese architects deliberately inserted mistakes in their designs to appease the gods, who believe only they are perfect. I love that the heart is a muscle. I love the economy of punctuation. I love the Radiator Building, the Queensboro Bridge, and the Sau Voi Corp. on Lafayette St. That perfect swing. I love that anything is interesting if you look at it closely enough. I love the smell of hamburgers that comes in through the window every day, every day, and that’s coming in through the window right now.

i hope you're smiling now too.

i'm completely coveting divert by camilla engman. now if i only had a couple hundred dollars laying around.

dexter dining room.

bloody comfortable and dismembered flatware created for the metropolitan home's showtime house dexter dining room by amy lau design.

as part of a month long, groundbreaking print and television partnership, a celebrated group of designers will transform a beautiful gramercy park townhouse into a luxurious beacon of modernism inspired by the top six original hit series from showtime.

the room features a table ready for a sit down dinner for twelve. curious of what it could be like to eat with dexter? this is not about what will be served, it is all about how to savor it... the table is set to play with our senses. setting the mood are amy lau's chairs, elegant, wounded and slashed; the clean, protective plastic tablecloth; the blood vials centerpieces. the table is surrounded by steven antonson’s candlesticks, reminiscent of vertebrae and filled with blood red candles, they easily fit a murderer’s grip. sip fine wines from thomas fuchs/otium designed glassware with luminous 'blood-filled' stems and ominous fingerprints. choose your weapon. savor the delectable dinner while challenged by steve butcher's dismembered flatware, a fascinating and disturbing set. nadeige choplet's handmade ceramic plates celebrate the love of blood via an intricate pattern of blood splatters, veins and capillaries under a delicate porcelain skin; and finally dessert can be enjoyed on klein reid's fine porcelain, served with the fine trace of a fingerprint.
